Spanish Harlem

East Harlem is now presently a combination of Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Dominican influences that have been built up from an Italian foundation.  Both St. Cecilia’s and Our Lady of Mount Carmel have adopted both masses and celebrations to fit the influx of Latin-American immigrants.

Advent celebration in Saint Cecilia's Parish. Notice the Mexican painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe located within the Basilica.

For example, the “Fiesta de la Cruz” is celebrated during the month of May at St. Cecilia’s parish.  This feast honors the month of May, which is celebrated among Roman Catholics as the month of Mary.  Dances are held in the street and traditional foods such as flan, los dulces, or arroz con gondules are served to the community.  The feast ends in front of St. Cecilia’s, where the pastor then blesses the celebration and all those in attendance.
