East Harlem: Schools

Although East Harlem was experiencing it’s own changes with “white flight,” and the influx of Hispanics, more African-Americans, and West Indians during the 1950’s, it could not escape the most profound decision in Supreme Court history. On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court announced their decision on the Brown v. the Board of Education case. The decision “declared segregation in public schools inherently unconstitutional” (Cottrol, Diamond, Leland 8). Therefore, overturning the previously established notion of “separate but equal.” This monumental decision would finally allow the people to mobilize and focus on taking education to the next plateau. East Harlem’s diversity eventually became less of a hindrance, and more of a tool in educating individuals to celebrate and accept their differences.

Currently El Barrio is charging towards the future with innovative schools and programs. Some of the new schools are as follows: the East Harlem School, Creative Arts Workshops for Kids, the Young Women Leadership School, Project Smart Schools, and many others. The new schools and programs were generally established to open up more opportunities to El Barrio’s youth. The children have been given the tools to succeed. All that is necessary from their part is faith, focus, and diligent work. These special programs attempt to evoke talent and good work ethnics. The schools try to cultivate various talents, sharpen skills, and perhaps more importantly open doors to the unexplored possibilities.
