Most businesses in East Harlem are made up of individual entities. There are mainly delis, restaurants, bakeries, and many other neighborhood stores. East Harlem is mainly a residential area. Most people commute to other parts of NYC to work and return home after a long day’s work. The income ranges from $10,000 to $160,000, but the average annual income of residents in East Harlem is about $17,000.

East Harlem Business Corporation (EHBC) is an organization created to help businesses in the community. EHBC provides loans, financial advice, and assistance for surviving in today’s economy. They help clean up graffiti and help advertise the stores in newspaper and over the radio. In September 2004, Charles Schumer obtained over $160,000 in funding from the US Small Business Administration for EHBC. The boost of financial aid to the organization allows East Harlem’s economy to be revitalized.

EHBC is currently working on a project to bring back “La Marqueta Internacional.” La Marqueta was a marketplace initially established when Laguardia was mayor of NYC. It extended from 111th to 116th Street. Vendors sold fruits, fishes, vegetables, and other exotic items. EHBC hopes to resurrect La Marqueta and make it an internationally known location. Tourists throughout the world would come and this would greatly benefit the economy in East Harlem.
