The kind of art that you see everywhere is murals drawn on the walls of buildings.

Each represents a different idea or shows a different side of the Barrio.
This is a mural painted on East 104st by Hank Prussing. In this mural, you can see the representation of the many different kinds of people in East Harlem all coming together in one place, which is what East Harlem is. It was painted in 1970 and was restored in the 1990's by the Hope Community that commissioned it and is located in East 104st.

 

 

  Amongst the many mural artists is a person called James De La Vega. He is an active mural artist whose art is located throughout the neighborhood. His art depicts many different things and each one has different themes.
For example, one of his murals depicts the picture of a saint and his face is covered with a smiley face. He is in fact making fun of the saint of that religion by doing so and expressing his opinions. To see a before and after picture of A Holy Figure, move your mouse over it. This wall painting is located at 106 Street near the corner of Lexington Avenue.

This is a picture of the Cuban entertainer Celia Cruz who died a week before this mural was painted byWanda Ortiz. It is to honor the Queen of Salsa who died at age 79. "Panorama of James De La Vega Tribute to Heroes of Liberation, Independence and of the People (September 1998)." It is to honor the heros and to remind people of their story and role in the independence. The mural is located at East 110th Street.
